Frequently Asked Questions

  • Therapeutic Consultation services, as defined in 12VAC30-122-550, are specialized professional supports provided by qualified practitioners such as behavior specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, therapeutic recreation specialists, and other approved disciplines.

These services are designed to guide and train families, caregivers, and support teams in implementing effective strategies that help an individual achieve the goals outlined in their person-centered plan.

Consultants conduct assessments, develop a therapeutic consultation support plan, and provide instruction and recommendations that enhance the individual’s overall independence and daily functioning.

Therapeutic Consultation is not direct therapy. Instead, it equips the care team with the tools and knowledge they need to support the individual across home, community, and program settings in a consistent and person-centered way.

  • Individuals enrolled in the Virginia Developmental Disability (DD) Waiver who receive services under the Family and Individual Supports (FIS) Waiver or the Community Living (CL) Waiver are eligible for Therapeutic Consultation.

  • No. Therapeutic Consultation is not direct therapy. Instead, consultants train and support caregivers, families, and staff to implement strategies that improve the individual's skills and daily functioning. Your consultant may meet with the individual to assess needs, but ongoing interventions are carried out by the support team.

  • Yes. TC services can be provided across settings where the individual needs support; such as home, community, school (if not duplicating school services), and day support or group homes/independent living homes.

  • No. Recreation Therapy Consultation does not provide transportation or direct community outings, as it is not a direct therapy service. Consultants do not transport individuals to or from appointments or community activities. However, consultants can meet the individual and their support team in community settings when training or observation in those environments is necessary. This allows the consultant to model strategies, provide real-time coaching, and help the team implement supports effectively across the individual’s natural environments.

  • Yes. Our Therapeutic Consultation services are offered throughout the state of Virginia. We provide both in-person and virtual support, depending on your location and the needs of the individual. Availability may vary by region, so please contact us to confirm whether in-person, virtual, or a combination of both services can be provided in your specific area.
